I love to cook, but before I can cook I always need to stop and shop at the supermarket! While some food in Japan takes on a similar name to its American counterpart (hamburger - hanbaaga), the majority will have a Japanese name. So let's go shopping at the supermarket and learn names for a variety of fruits, veggies, dairy and meats! Yasai - vegetable やさい Daikon - radish だいこん Ninjin - carrot にんじん Nasu - eggplant なす Tomorokoshi - corn ともろこし Jagaimo - potato じゃがいも Kyuuri - cucumber きゅうり Negi - scallion ねぎ Tamanegi - onion たまねぎ Kudamono - fruit くだもの Ringo - apple りんご Ichigo - strawberry いちご Momo - peach もも Mikan - orange みかん Suika - watermelon すいか Budou - grapes ぶどう Sakuranbo - cherry さくらんぼ Tamago - egg たまご Gyuunyuu - milk ぎゅうにゅう Gyuuniku - beef ぎゅうにく Ushi - cow うし Butaniku - pork ぶたにく Buta - pig ぶた Toriniku - chicken (meat) とりにく Niwatori - chicken (bird) にわとり Toriniku wo kudasai - please give me the chicken とりにくをください Tamago wa ikura desu ka - how much are the eggs? たまごはいくらですか So next time you're walking through the supermarket looking at all the different foods, try to remember these names!
