At Least 11 Dead, Thousands Evacuated as Floods Hit Western India

At least 11 people were killed and six are missing after the Indian city of Pune and its neighboring areas were hit by heavy rain and flash floods on Wednesday, September 25. More than 28,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas and the local administration is on alert for more rain, local officials said. Pune, which is around 200 kilometers south-west of Mumbai, has received more rain than expected during this monsoon season. Five of the dead were reported to have been killed when a wall collapsed. India's monsoons, which usually run from June-September, deliver more than 70 percent of the country's annual rainfall and are crucial for farm output and economic growth. But the heavy rains often weaken the foundations of poorly built walls and buildings resulting in deaths and building collapses. (Reuters) #floods #voa update #voa news
