Clashes Erupt at Flamengo Championship Celebration
Rio de Janeiro, Sunday, November 24.
Tens of thousands of the team’s supporters took to the streets peacefully for hours before the clashes erupted in late afternoon.
It was not clear how the clashes began, but supporters were throwing rocks and beer bottles at the police, who responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Fans had plenty of reason to celebrate as Flamengo won their first cup in 38 years, after their country suffered a period of economic stagnation and political infighting in Rio. (AP)
