As of this week, inmates already assigned to sewing duties at The Fort Bend County jail in Texas are now making face masks to help in the fight against the coronavirus. ————————— READ MORE: The jail has zero COVID-19 cases so far and jail inmates are working to keep it that way. They've been producing about 100 per day, said Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls. Deputies came up with the idea after observing the impact that the sheriff office's free disinfectant distribution program had on the community. The sheriff said they're compliant with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention standards for the general public. The U.S. has over 465,000 COVID-19 cases and more than 16,000 deaths. The top U.S. infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said Thursday it is uncertain whether the threat of the coronavirus sweeping the world will fade as the weather turns warmer in the Northern Hemisphere in the coming weeks. Fauci told ABC's "Good Morning America" that with other infections like influenza, when the weather gets warmer "the virus goes down in its ability to replicate, to spread." The world's nations continue to struggle with the health and economic fallout from the coronavirus. By the latest count, more than 1.5 million people across the globe have contracted COVID-19, and more than 90,000 have died.
